Shaykh Muqbil ibn Hādī al-Wādi’ī on Jarḥ wa Ta’dīl and Those Who Oppose It
Question: “From the people (The Shaykh interrupts saying: “Write this down In shā Allāh”) are those who object to blaming partisanship (Ḥizbiyyah) and they stand up sluggishly against dispraising innovation, along with some people who cling on to them and they consider criticizing them to be backbiting and slandering and opening the door for making the enemies happy, so what is the response to them?”
Shaykh Muqbil (رحمه الله): “The response to them is via the Book of Allāh and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وسلم).
Mūsā said to his companion, “Verily you are a clear misleader.”
Rabb Al-‘Izzah (Lord of All Might) says in His Noble Book: “If a fāsiq (wicked person) comes to you with news then verify it, lest you should harm people in ignorance and afterwards become regretful for what you have done.” (Sūrat al-Ḥujurāt 49:6)
And the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said to Mu’ādh, “Are you a trouble-maker O Mu’ādh?”
And he said to Abī Dharr, “You are a person who still has (aspects of) Jāhiliyyah.”
And he also said, “I don’t think this person and that person know anything from our religion.”
So those Muslim (scholars) whose opinions are valid have consensus upon the validity of Jarḥ wa Ta’dīl.
As for the people of desires, then yes, it hurts them that we say about the deviant that he’s deviant and about the wicked that he’s wicked. Yes, that hurts them, but this is the Dīn (religion).
And Shu’bah used to say, “Come let us backbite for the Sake of Allāh.”
Do you think O brothers, that we want to speak about the Bankrupt Brotherhood (i.e. the Muslim Brotherhood), or we want to speak about those in Jam’iyyah Aṣḥāb al-Ḥikmah? No by Allāh, we do not want to speak about them, but the Dīn compels us to. The religion is sincere advice. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, “The Dīn is sincere advice.”
[Audio missing] “… (and whoever lives after me) will see plenty of differing, so cling firm to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs. Bite on to it with your molar teeth, and beware of newly invented matters.”
Ibn Ḥibbān said, “In this ḥadīth is criticism of the people of innovation and disparagement of them.” And other than Ibn Ḥibbān also (said) similar (to this), na’am.
And the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, “Verily Allāh has prevented repentance from every person of innovation until he leaves off his innovation.”
Whoever sympathises and worries about the Muslim Brotherhood, then I have said to you before, let someone go to them who will say to them: Fear Allāh and let them work with their brothers from Ahl as-Sunnah and leave off this partisanship. And other than them as well, and let them hold on to the Book and the Sunnah.
We have not seen any benefit from this partisanship my brothers. (It is) a scheme from America to break the unity of the Muslims, na’am.
Rabb Al-‘Izzah says in His Noble Book, “Help one another in birr and taqwā (virtue and piety) and do not help one another upon sin and transgression.” (Sūrat al-Mā’idah 5:2).”
